How to buy D&D Dice in Singapore

A dice set is one of the most important gameplay accessories and the first thing you need to buy when playing tabletop games like Dungeons & Dragons and other TTRPG systems.

The thought of rolling anything other than the common Monopoly 6-sided dice can be a little confusing, especially for new players taking their first steps into a tabletop adventure. In this article, we’ll give you a quick rundown on what a D&D/TTRPG dice set is and how to get started with choosing your dice sets.

D&D and TTRPG Dice sets

D&D has inspired many other role-playing games in which this 7-dice set system is used.

You'll find d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, d20, and d00 in a standard set. The number refers to the number of sides on the dice, so a twenty-sided die is called a d20. A twelve-sided die is called a d12.

Most of the time, the fortune of your character is determined by nothing but a single dice roll. Want to check for traps? Grab that d20 and do a Perception Check. Want to attack a hobgoblin? Roll an Attack Roll with your d20 to see if you hit it.

A d20 is the main dice you’ll be rolling most of the time in a Dungeons & Dragons game. The other dice are mainly weapon dice, except D00.

D00s are often referred to as percentile dice as it’s used to calculate percentage scores. To get a percentage roll, simply roll your d00 and d10 together and you’ve got yourself a percentage. For example, you roll an 80 on your d00, and an 8 on your d10 – that’s 88.

How to choose your D&D dice set

If you're a new D&D player, choosing what dice to buy can be a challenge. With so many dice manufacturers producing an abundance of pretty options, it can get overwhelming looking for a dice set for your game.

We advise you to start looking at dice sets from your local game store, as you’ll be able to check the following:

  • Balance and Fairness You’ll be using your dice to simulate random chance, so you want them to have equal probabilities across all sides. If your d20 keeps landing on a six, you probably won’t have a fun time playing. Roll and test your dice to see if any of them tend to lean to one side. If they feel uneven, unbalanced, or asymmetrical in your fingers, they won't roll true.

  • Readability Equally important as balance and fairness are the readability of your dice. You don’t want to be squinting to read your die. Choose a dice set with numbers that stand out from the faces, making them easier to read for everyone at the table.

  • Material There are different materials for dice too. Resin, metal, wood, or gemstone. Wood dice are light, while metal dice are weighty and shiny. Metal dice can be a little tricky to roll – be sure to use a dice tray or dice mat to roll them on unless you want dents and scratches on the table.

  • Thematic/Style One of the most important elements to consider (according to most players and DM’s) is the style. Dice-themed to your character’s favourite colour, matching your character’s visual flavour, or even to your character’s backstory.

There are all kinds of dice out there, and you can be sure that whatever you imagine or want, some shop somewhere is selling, or it’s Kickstarter, Etsy, or handcrafted by artisan dice makers.
